| The soprano saxophone is a higher member of the saxophone consort, a woodwind instrument, invented in the 1840's by Adophe Sax. The soprano is the third smallest member of the saxophone family, which consists (from smallest to largest) of the soprillo, sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, bass, contrabass, and sub-contrabass. Due to its similarity in tone to the oboe, the soprano saxophone is seldom used in the concert band or orchestra. Instead, it is primarily used as a solo instrument in smaller jazz bands or "combos". |
